Welcome to Bristow
Thank you, 6th grade students and parents! We had such a great time at the 6th grade BBQ!
Notes from the Nurse:
Welcome back. I hope all the students had a relaxing and healthy summer. I would like to remind you of a few policies as we start the new school year.
Every effort should be made to have any medications given at home. If this is not possible, remember that ALL medications, including non-prescription medications (Tylenol and Ibuprofen), require written authorization from a doctor and parent in order for me to administer medication to your child in school. (Please remember that we do not supply the medication). Students may carry their own asthma inhalers with a completed authorization form on file in the nurse’s office. You may obtain an authorization form directly from me or you can print it from Bristow’s website, click on Nurse located in the left hand column.
Over the next month, I will be conducting scoliosis screenings for girls in 7th grade and boys in 8th grade only. The purpose of this screening program is the early identification of spinal curvature so that your child’s primary care provider can confirm the curve and treatment be initiated. The State of Connecticut no longer requires middle schools to screen for vision and hearing deficits. However, the town of West Hartford will continue to provide vision screenings in 7th grade. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s vision or hearing, you may contact the school nurse for an in-school evaluation or your primary care provider. Parents will be notified only if the findings require further evaluation from your physician.
PHYSICALS: SIXTH GRADE
Connecticut requires all sixth grade students to have a physical examination done by your child’s primary care provider during either the fifth or sixth grade school year. The State of Connecticut now requires the following immunizations in order to enter seventh grade: Menactra (meningitis), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis), and a second Varicella (chicken pox). Please assure that your child is adequately immunized. Your child’s completed exam and proof of required immunizations need to be in the nurse’s office by June 30, 2018 in order for you child to be admitted into seventh grade.
