Early Closing Information
When school is delayed or there is an early closing, please do not call the school office. If school is closing early, we will send out an automated call. Please listen to the entire message so that you have all of the information regarding the closing.

Due to emergencies, such as inclement weather, electrical outages, and other unforeseen circumstances, it is sometimes necessary to make changes to the school day for the safety of our students. Please take the time before an emergency arises to develop a contingency plan in the event of a school delay, early dismissal, or cancellation and discuss it with your child.
Parents are reminded that regardless of the exact timing of a storm occurring during the school day, the early dismissal schedule is as follows:
- Elementary schools: 11:45am
- Middle schools: 11:00am
- High schools: 10:30am
These early dismissal times will not vary. There are multiple information sources that will provide you with changes to the school day including:
- FM Radio
- AM Radio
- When school is cancelled or delayed, all before school activities are also cancelled. This includes breakfast, vocal music, instrumental music, and any before school classes.
- WHEE will always be delayed by the same amount of time that school is delayed (from a 7:30 a.m. start time). For example, a one hour delay = a one hour delay for WHEE opening.
- If there is a delayed opening on a Wednesday, school WILL DISMISS AT THE USUAL 2:00 P.M. DISMISSAL TIME.
Absent or Tardy
Please call the school office before 8:30 a.m. or the voice mail absence box 232-3334 (box 305) if your child is going to be absent or tardy. We appreciate your consideration in making this telephone call.
Visitor and Volunteer Sign-In
Anyone visiting or volunteering at Smith School during school hours should enter at the bus entrance door. You will have to press the buzzer and announce your name, then proceed to the office. You will be required to wear a volunteer or visitor name badge. Your cooperation is appreciated and essential.
What School Volunteers Can Do at Our School
One of the most frequently asked questions from potential volunteers is, "What can I do that will be useful?" Click hereto find out what you can do to support Smith School!
Please obey all posted signs and traffic regulations when driving on school grounds or near our school. Remember the one-way drive is for buses only during arrival and dismissal times. Please do not park in the one-way drive one half hour before arrival or dismissal.
Please make sure to send in a note to your child's teacher whenever there is a change in your child's after-school plans. Unless there is a note, children will follow their usual after-school arrangements, i.e., ride the bus, go to WHEE, or walk home. Please plan ahead and try not to call the office with changes in dismissal plans since we cannot guarantee that telephone messages will be conveyed to students prior to dismissal.
It is the policy of Smith School not to interrupt classes to convey telephone messages to students. We request that early dismissal or after-school plans be finalized prior to students' arrival at school each day since we cannot guarantee that telephone messages will be conveyed prior to dismissal. If there are changes in dismissal plans please send a note to your child's teacher.
