Behind the Design

A Connected, Collaborative Learning Environment

Charter Oak International Academy is an International Baccalaureate® (IB) World School. Like all IB schools, Charter Oak provides a unique, inquiry based learning experience. Students become immersed in traditional and global studies as active participants, leading discussions and posing questions.

A Collaborative Design

When the time came to plan and design the new Academy, we followed the IB collaborative approach; we turned first to the Charter Oak community. Our community has always encompassed much more than the physical space we occupy, so it was only natural for us to join forces with parents, students, and teachers. Their input was invaluable in helping to shape the new school.

A Space that Reflects and Facilitates Our Collective Mission

Our new building and classrooms are specially designed to help our students become curious, problem-solving global citizens. The first thing one notices is the unique circular design, which both represents and supports our school’s transdisciplinary and inclusive approach to learning. IB schools support connections across subjects and grades, and now the physical plan of the school echoes and supports this distinctive educational philosophy.

The enclosed courtyard is designed to be the heart of the school, and will be large enough to accommodate multiple classes simultaneously. The auditorium stage will be equipped to open into the courtyard, accommodating indoor and/ or outdoor seating.

Technology-rich classrooms will promote research, creativity, and confidence through a variety of media tools. Media and technology systems are designed to be easily accessible to students and teachers, as well as easily updated as technology and needs inevitably evolve.

This has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a physical environment that directly reflects the collaborative and connected learning environment that is Charter Oak International Academy. It would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and support of our remarkable community.
