Parent FAQ's for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

My son or daughter is bringing his iPad to school for instructional purposes. Will he have access to things he normally does with district equipment?

Your son or daughter will have access to any of the web based software high school schooles currently use (Google Docs, Moodle, databases, library search tools etc.). Software may run differently on different devices for varying reasons. You should consult your owner’s manual for software limitations. (e.g. iPads cannot run software requiring Flash Player).

As a parent, am I required to add additional software (virus protection, filter, tracking device etc.) to my child’s technology tool?

No. Currently we are not requiring any additional software for school use. Virus protection is always advised, but not required to access the Guest network. A product called Absolute Software can be installed on the device to track the location in case of theft. While on the WHPS network, students will be monitored through the district’s filter, so there is no need for additional filtering software.

I have read the terms of service and I do not wish to have my daughter accessing the Internet using her own laptop. I would like to allow her to continue using her computer for productivity, but not the Internet. Is this allowable?

Yes, your daughter may choose not to accept the terms of use, however, the rules outlined in the AUP still apply for technology use of any kind (Internet or other). Also, it is not the responsibility of school staff to ensure she has not accessed the Web on her own technology device. Damage or theft is still the responsibility of the owner.

If my son or daughter’s laptop is stolen or damaged, what recourse can I take?

The district is not responsible for any damage or theft of student owned equipment. Using tracking software can help locate the equipment if it is stolen, and keeping track of the device’s serial number, model and type will be helpful as well. Theft or vandalism of any kind should be reported immediately to an administrator, so he/she can take the appropriate steps.

What are the classroom rules for using student owned devices including phones?

Teachers make the final decision for any tools used in the classroom; student owned equipment would be no different. It will be up to the individual teachers to communicate their expectations to parents and students. Contact your child’s teachers or administration for his/her expectations.

Will my child have access to communication tools like email or message boards while on the WHPS Guest network?

Yes. All students have user accounts for Google Apps for Education. Google Apps includes email, file storage, blogs, and other useful educational tools.

Where can I see the Acceptable Use Policy for Technology?

Board policy is available online at the following link: WHPS Acceptable Use Policy

My child does not have his/her own electronic communication device to bring to school. Will he/she be penalized or miss out on instruction?

No, it is not mandatory for students to bring a device, even if they do own one. Use of personal electronic devices will be optional. Keep in mind that learning can be enhanced greatly for the entire class even if only a handful of students have a device! Whenever electronic devices are required to enhance learning in the classroom, students will be provided access to an appropriate WHPS District owned electronic device.

Is it required that my child use the School wireless? Can they use their own wifi/data plan?

Students with a personally owned device need to use the guest wireless network.

What are some antivirus software options?

Because the devices are owned by you, West Hartford Public Schools is unable to provide you with Antivirus/Anti-Malware software. We strongly encourages you to install Antivirus and/or Anti-Malware software on any personally owned devices which you will allow your student to bring to school and to keep the Antivirus/Anti-Malware software up to date at all times.
If you are unable or unwilling to purchase antivirus software, the following companies provide free antivirus solutions:
Additionally, for Microsoft Windows based computers, it is recommended that you install the Windows updates as they are made available by Microsoft. You can read about how to do that here.

What resources are there to deal with Internet Safety/Cyberbullying?

We encourage you to visit the CyberCompass website for up-date information and the Common Sense Media website, Privacy and Internet Safety

Encourage your student and be involved. Parents are strongly encouraged to be aware of the programs and apps that their children are installing on their devices as well as the activities that they are engaged in when using the devices. The following are links to websites which provide you with information on responsible "Digital Citizenry"
